Deonte Jackson joined the Vandals as an invited walkon in 2006 under former head coach Dennis Erickson, wowing coaches with his talent throughout his redshirt year.
Under then-first year head coach Robb Akey, he immediately earned the starting nod during spring drills following his redshirt year, and went on to become Idaho's top running back for the 2007 season as a redshirt freshman. His first year as a starter was phenominal, and included setting a NEW freshman rushing record at Idaho (1,175 yards), earning Second Team All-WAC honors, being named an Honorable Mention Freshman All-American by The Sporting News, and ranking 4th in the country among freshman tailbacks (37th overall).
In 2008 as a sophomore he battled significant back pain all season and shared runningback duties with a host of talented athletes. Despite the pain, he finished again as Idaho's top runningback, gaining 696 yards (4.3 YPC) and scoring 3 touchdowns along the way.
Recognized as the heart and soul of the Vandal rushing attack, Jackson will be expected to be among Idaho's top tailbacks going into the 2009 season in a depth chart that is among the deepest and most talented on the team. He was recognized this summer on Phil Steele's preseason All-WAC Team as a Third Team pick, and is poised for a stellar 2009 season.
