Was an All-California Region II quarterback selection as a redshirt freshman at Monteray Peninsula College. Led the Lobos to a perfect 10-0 record, and threw for 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in his one season with the program.
The year before joining the Lobo program, Reader spent a season redshirting as a freshman at the University of Arkansas where he joined the Razorback program as a preferred walkon.
As a senior at Palma (Calif.) High School he broke several school passing records in his only season as the starter. A three-sport athlete, Reader passed for 2,411 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior while completing more than 64 percent of his passes. He earned a number of honors including Tri-County Athletic League MVP and All-League quarterback. He was named by The Monterey County Herald to the All Monterey County Football Team, and he was named by The Salina Californian as the Monterey County Offensive Player of the Year.
