Returned to Idaho in 2006 as the Vandals head football coach, and will work to rebuild the team that he put on the college football map in the early 1980s.

1982-1985 - Idaho (32-15)
Accomplishments
- Led Oregon State to an 11-1 record (2000), then thumped Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl.
- Led the Miami Hurricanes to the National Championship (1991).
- Led the Miami Hurricanes to the National Championship (1989).
- Snapped Oregons State's NCAA record 28-year losing streak by going 7-5 in 1999.
- Guided Cougars (9-3) to the 1988 Aloha Bowl, beating Houston 24-22.
- Guided Idaho to a 9-3 record (1985) and a Big Sky Conference Championship.
- Guided Idaho to a 41-22 win over Oregon State in 1984, while Idaho was 1-AA and OSU was a member of the PAC-10.
