Idaho's much maligned young defensive unit held one of the Western Athletic Conference's top passing attacks to just 14 points Saturday afternoon, and the Vandal offense put together its best rushing effort of the season to amass 271 yards on the ground against New Mexico State. Idaho tailback PRINCETON MCCARTY had a career day, gaining 160 yards on 15 carries to propel Idaho to a 20-14 victory.

GAME BALL GOES TO... Redshirt freshman tailback Princeton McCarty on offense, and sophomore outside linebacker Justin Allen defensively. McCarty was virtually unstoppable in the first half, racking up most of his 160 yards rushing in the first two quarters alone. Defensively, Allen was all over the map for the Vandals, finishing second on the team with eight tackles, picking off a first half pass, and recovering a crucial second half fumble for Idaho with NMSU in scoring position.

HATS OFF TO... Idaho's special teams units today. Idaho field goal kicker Tino Amancio connected on a career best 52-yard attempt, then converted a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter to give Idaho the 20-14 lead the Vandals carried into the locker room at the end of the game. Kickoff specialist Vicente Rico had just one kickoff returned all afternoon, and punter T.J. Conley was unmatched all afternoon, averaging 44.3 yards on three punts on the afternoon. These senior specialists have been among the most consistent for Idaho this season, and they came up big for Idaho in the Homecoming victory.

AND ONE MORE HAT OFF TO... Senior defensive end Josh Shaw. Josh has been a key member of the Vandal defensive front since his true freshman season, and this year has been a starter in every game. He had the best game of his career Saturday, leading the Vandals with 10 tackles, TWO quarterback sacks, a total of three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry. It was one of the best performances by a Vandal defensive end in years, and he gave the Idaho defensive front one of its best punches of the 2008 season.
