Last week GoVandals.net confirmed that Snake River Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year…
Between Idaho and Washington State
The Vandals have definitely made the offensive line a priority this recruiting season, and Tyler Kuder (6-4, 265) is a tremendous athlete out of Payette (Ida.) High School. How good? Last year as a junior he was named a First Team All-State selection as an offensive lineman.
Shockingly, that may not have been his best position. Displaying impressive agility for a big athlete, he's also a standout linebacker for the Pirates and earned Second Team All State honors as a linebacker in 2008. His defensive stats included averaging eight tackles per game and registering six tackles for loss on the 2008 season (three sacks). He also caused four fumbles and nabbed one interception. That's a 6-4, 260 pound athlete we're talking about here, and a prospect with the size and agility to play numerous positions at the Division 1A level. And for the record, he earned All-Conference honors as an offensive lineman and linebacker last year.
So how is recruiting going for the Idaho star who is flying a little bit under the radar. "It's going great," Kuder told GoVandals.net "I went to Idaho last week [for the Colorado State game] and it wasn't too bad. I liked how the team was and how the coaching staff was, and all that.
"I'm pretty sure it's UI, one-hundred percent," he added. "I'm going to the Washington State game this weekend, and then I'll make my final decision. But Washington State doesn't have anything on the U of I."
The Vandals are currently recruiting the big athlete with a mean-streak as a defensive lineman for the Class of 2010, but he's leaving the door open to find the position where he fits in best with the program. "I'm going to enroll [at Idaho ] this summer and then they'll find out where they want to put me, and if I'm going to redshirt next year or play."
The plan to enroll early is to get used to the college transition as soon as possible. "It was their [his parent's] idea basically," Kuder told GoVandals.net. "They want me to get used to the college life when there's hardly anyone there, to get used to it a little bit - get used to the team - instead of just going in the fall and jumping right into it."
Asked to describe his strongest attraction to the program, Kuder didn't hesitate. "It's like a family friendly environment, and they want you as a part of the family instead of just another player on the team."
For those that have followed the program the last three years, it's a common theme in the Akey regime.
And his impressions of the campus? "It was really nice, tree-lined everywhere - it just looked really nice."
The atmosphere at the Colorado State game made an impression on Kuder as well. "It was pretty cool. Glad we won. In the first half I was wondering if Idaho was going come back and win, they weren't playing too great. But they came out and won."
Besides the game and improving to 4-1 going into the Western Athletic Conference season, the Vandals may have also won over another powerful trench warrior in Tyler Kuder for the 2010 Recruiting Class.
