Wenatchee (Wash.) center Mike Marboe, one of the elite centers nationally, picks up another offer…
BREAKING: Marboe Makes His Decision
When contacted by GoVandals.Net, Marboe quickly made his commitment known. "I committed to Idaho on Monday [September 14th]," he said, adding that he will be on the University of Idaho campus this weekend for another unofficial visit for the Vandals home opener against San Diego State (2:00 pm PST kickoff) in the renovated Kibbie Dome.
When asked how Robb Akey took the good news Monday night, Marboe said, "He was very excited, very excited." It may be the understatement of the recruiting season so far. Marboe added that his recruiting process is over, and that "Idaho was the best fit for me and I'm really excited. I went and looked at every school I was recruited by and Idaho was the best fit for me - I'm really excited about it [playing for Idaho]," Marboe added.
An outstanding student at Wenatchee High School who is packing a 3.9 GPA, Marboe was an AP First Team All-State selection as a junior in 2008. He was also a unanimous pick First Team All Big-9 selection on offense.
Marboe described his strongest attributes on the gridiron as playing "aggressive" and a "willingness to play the game." The 3-star recruit told GVN that he plans to major in business while playing center for the Vandals. Marboe added that he plans to attend law school after completing this undergraduate degree at Idaho. "I liked the campus," Mike told GoVandals.net when asked to describe his impressions of the school and campus. "Kind of an old-school college-feel to it, and I liked the facilities, the coaches and all that stuff."
College football and the State of Idaho run together in the Marboe family. His father, Scott Marboe, played one year for the Idaho Vandals in the 1970's for Coach Troxel. His cousin, Brad Marboe, is a redshirt freshman linebacker for Robb Akey's current Vandal team. His uncle, who shares the same name, Mike "The Ox" Marboe, attended Idaho in the 1980's. Another uncle, Kent Marboe, played football for Idaho State.
Marboe's grandfather and great grandfather also attended Idaho. So, when Mike enrolls this fall, it will mark the continuation of the 4th generation of Vandals for the Marboe family in Moscow. "That's a family history," Mike said when describing his Idaho legacy.
When the Vandals offered Marboe, they were looking for a future center that would fit their long-term rebuilding plans, bring academic strength, and more football talent to Moscow. The strategic move is that the Vandals would get Marboe into the system behind Guy Reynolds (a redshirt freshman this year) and Clell Hasenbank (a junior this season).
As stated in a previous GoVandals.net article, the rebuilding process is very dependent on recruiting, developing, and building a good, effective line on both sides of the trenches. Mike Marboe is a classic example of that strategy and process – a process that is managed by Dan Finn, Idaho Offensive Line Coach, and Robb Akey in his third year as Idaho's Head Football Coach.
Another factor in Marboe's commitment to Idaho was playing time and the opportunity to play soon. "I want to play as much as I can in college" Marboe stated, when asked about additional factors in his recent decision. He also added, "Just the coaches there – we've been in a pretty good relationship – I love that area of the country – I grew up around it [the Palouse]."
When asked about his family's reaction to his commitment, Marboe recounted the story. "I told my Uncle and stuff, and they're all fired up. My family's really excited too. It was an awesome decision – I'm really excited about my decision."
We're fairly confident everyone inside the Idaho program is too.
INSIDE SLANT: The Lewiston Morning Tribune reported earlier this week that the University of Idaho received verbal commitments from two other prospects: QB Justin Podrabsky and OL Spencer Beale, both out of Lewiston High School. Podrabsky is the No. 126-ranked quarterback according to Scout.com, while Beale is the No. 141-ranked offensive tackle. Look for updates on GVN in the days ahead.
