It's still very early in the recruiting season, but Los Medanos WR Michael Lindsey (6-3, 205)…
BREAKING: Speed merchant verbals to Idaho
The stakes in that claim may have just been raised.
Los Medanos (Cali.) College standout receiver Michael Lindsey, an imposing athlete at 6-3, 211-pounds with a lightning fast 4.32-forty, spoke to Scout.com with an update in his college plans for 2009.
"I was committed to Memphis this spring," Lindsey, who hails from St. Petersburg, Florida, told Scout.com. "But it came down to Memphis and Idaho. I went on my trip to Memphis in the spring and I liked it." From a Scout.com report filed earlier this year, he was leaning towards Memphis but planned to continue looking at other schools in the fall.
Among those schools was the University of Idaho.
"On my trip to Idaho it was cool. Coaches were showing me more, convincing me more - showing me where I was gonna be on the field and everything. It's a football town at Idaho, and man, I haven't experienced nuthin' like that."
With his official trips behind him, he was able to make a decision. "I called my family and I said Idaho was where it was at. They said to do what I feel, and my heart was at Idaho. I think I made the right choice."
And with that, the verbal commitment to Idaho was made. "I told the Idaho coaches and they were excited," Lindsay said. "I called coach Theilbahr (who was running point for Idaho in the recruitment of the 3-star athlete) and he told all the other coaches. He told coach Akey and everyone else. They called, contacted me, and congratulated me."
With what Lindsey brings to the table - size, speed, elusiveness and an ability to separate from cornerbacks - it's safe to assume there was some cheering on the other end of the phone line.
Lindsey had a prolific true freshman season in 2007, then spent last season redshirting to focus on academics. He will be wrapping up his coursework this summer and expects to join the Vandal team in the fall. When he hits the Idaho campus he will have three years to complete three years of eligibility, joining the Vandal team as a redshirt sophomore.
As a freshman in 2007 at Los Medanos, his stats were impressive. He led the team in catches and yards, with 34 receptions for 776 yards and nine touchdowns in ten games. His yards and receptions were No. 2 overall among California Community College receivers that year. He also finished second on the team in kick returns that year to teammate Kevin Williams, with 380 yards on 14 returns and a 70 yards touchdown burst. He was named an All-Conference selection at wide receiver and earned MVP honors as well.
With this kind of a background, he will be virtually impossible to keep off the field when he joins the team in the fall.
