Fall Camp Begins August 5th

Inside we provide a quick update on Idaho's continuously developing strength program, highlighting a couple names of players who recently crossed the 400-pound bench-press plateau. Also inside is a brief look at the interior defensive line depth heading into the '08 season, and a Fall Practice Schedule is also provided as Camp kicks off next Tuesday afternoon (August 5th).

The 2008 Vandal football team has been putting in serious hours this offseason preparing for the 2008 campaign, and below we provide a few updates we've learned in recent weeks.

400-POUND BENCH PRESS-CLUB GROWS:

Bryce Sinclair
According to our sources, you can add senior H-Back Eddie Williams (6-2, 240) and junior offensive tackle Bryce "Big Nasty" Sinclair (6-5.5, 325) to the list of players that can bench 400 pounds or more on the Idaho roster. This is major folks...when Nick Holt took over, we were told back then that there were NONE that could lift that much. The revitalization of the Idaho strength program began under Aaron Ausmus in 2004, and has been taken to increasingly higher levels under current Head Strength Coach Scott Gadeken and his staff in the last three years. At some point the work being put in by the Idaho athletes will pay dividends on the field, and we salute their efforts this offseason.

ON THE CUSP OF THE 400-POUND MARK:

Junior runningback Devon Sturdivant (5-11, 208), who reportedly is going to continue getting looks at H-Back this fall, is nearing the 400 pound bench target. As reported in our story covering the Night of Champions this spring, Devon had a stunning lift in the clean (385 pounds), and he is now on the verge of hitting the 400-pound mark in the bench press. Given his 208 pound weight, his performance in the weightroom is phenominal. Also of particular note, junior All-WAC safety Shiloh Keo (5-10, 213) and incoming junior defensive tackle Oga Faumui (6-2, 297) - as well as others - are approaching the 400-pound mark. Overall, the number of kids benching 325 or more on the team has grown substantially every year, and the class coming in (as well as last year's class) will push the team percentage even higher. Case in point, we've learned through sources that incoming true freshman linebacker Tre'Shawn Robinson (5-11, 240) - the 2007 Baseline League Defensive MVP - comes to Idaho with a bench of 350-pounds.

D-LINE DEPTH GROWING

As pointed out above, incoming transfer Oga Faumui (6-2, 297) is anticipated to have an enormous impact boosting the size and strength of the interior defensive line. Mix him in with sophomore noseguard Jonah Sataraka (6-2, 288) - the strongest player on the team - as well as sophomores Aaron Lavarias (6-3, 265) and Fonomanu Sekona (6-2, 281) who saw extensive playing time last fall as freshmen, and redshirt freshman Michael Cosgrove (6-4, 265) who had a solid redshirt year last year. Add in the rest of the depth chart and the incoming freshmen (including Henry Asuega at 6-2, 279), and Idaho now has the most interior defensive line depth the unit has enjoyed in many, many years. As with the offensive line, it has taken years to rebuild this unit, and the depth - albeit young - is beginning to show.
