Bailey's Comet Bound For Idaho
PLAYER PROFILE: Kama Bailey, 5-9, 180, 4.46, RB
"I'm going to attend the University of Idaho," Hawaiian speedster Kama Bailey to Scout.com this evening. "I had other schools to visit [he had an official visit scheduled for the U.S. Naval Academy], but actually I went to the University of Idaho and I made my decision there - I didn't book any more visits."
Hosted by powerful Vandal offensive lineman Mike Iupati (Idaho's starting left guard last season), Bailey had a chance to meet most of the team during his visit in January. The trip to Moscow was sandwiched between a visit to Idaho State the week before, and the planned trip to Annapolis. "I enjoyed myself, I had a good time and I really liked it," he said of his trip to the Idaho campus. "I really liked the facilities - the sports facilities. The football stadium, the football locker room, and just the people there. There are a lot of Polynesians there so it was real nice."
And the reaction of players and coaches when he made his commitment known during his visit? "They were very excited, they said thanks, and they were very welcoming – it was a good time."
A common theme in the Akey era.
ANOTHER COMMONLY APPEARING THEME IN THE Robb Akey era is Idaho's pursuit of outstanding tailbacks. Last year the Vandals signed decorated Las Vegas tailback Corey White (5-8, 195, 4.55), a speedster who redshirted last season while redshirt freshman Deonte Jackson (5-8, 191) set a new University of Idaho freshman rushing record.
As Idaho found out last year (and for several years prior), it takes a stable of backs to navigate a college football season. The rush was on to continue building the chart.
Earlier this recruiting season Idaho received a huge verbal commitment from Texas Class 4A First Team All-State runningback selection Troy Vital (6-0, 200, 4.45), who carved up, ran over, and blew by defenses for 2,034 yards and scored 25 touchdowns without a SINGLE fumble on the year, leading his team to the Texas Class 4A State Championship game.
Though separated by thousands of miles, the similarity in performance is astonishing. Bailey set a new Hawaii state single-season rushing record gaining 2,098 yards as a senior this year, scoring 22 touchdowns along the way. A slasher with great vision, Bailey averaged 10.9 yards per carry for the Monarchs. He set an Interscholastic League of Honolulu single-game record with a insane 370-yard, five touchdown performance for the ages in November.
And this wasn't just a "one and done" deal for the 2-year starter either. As a junior he gained 1,570 yards while scoring 13 touchdowns.
He obviously knows his way around the gridiron.
"I would love to play right away," Bailey told Scout. "Just come in as a true freshman and play. But I know that when I get there in the fall I'll have to work my butt off and get a spot. I will play runningback, and I would like to be a returner."
AS SOLID IN THE CLASSROOM AS ON THE FIELD, Bailey's academic strength is mathematics as he maintains a 3.5 grade point average at Damien Memorial High School. An active member of the student body, he has served as the secretary for the student government each of the last two years.
Asked what his academic pursuits would be at Idaho, Bailey is considering a couple options. "Right now I'm still debating between Mechanical Engineering or something in Architecture."
