Idaho, newly available WR: Mutual interest
The Kessmans have since been in contact with a number of schools, including the Vandals.
"We got a call from Idaho, the Vandals and also Utah State, very interested. And I understand ASU is also," said Steve Kessman. "UCLA is very, very interested. Hawaii called yesterday and said as long as he doesn't have to sit out another year, they could use him. They don't have a scholarship for him if he has to sit out another year."
The elder Kessman said the full release from BYU would enable his son, as long as academic requirements are met, not to have to sit out a year due to transfer, and he would have 4-to-play-4.
"As long as he finished his 24 units by the end of the summer, he can play football in the fall," he added.
The younger Kessman was redshirting this season at BYU and did not participate in a game.
Kessman's father said they're at the very beginning of what figures to be a deliberate process, but that the Kessmans also have strong early interest in UCLA and Hawaii, along with another school.
"...The Vandals are also tops on his list. (But) he doesn't have a preference...he's going to think it through," he said.
COMING OUT OF San Jacinto High his senior year, Kessman was utilized as runner more than receiver, with 102 rushes for 1,134 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had 16 receptions for 188 yards and one score.
His junior season out wide, he pulled down 43 receptions for 848 yards and 12 TDs, while averaging 38 yards on punt returns and 46 yards on kickoff returns.
Kessman's leaving BYU has been well documented in the Utah press, with the official release by BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall stating: "Ryan has expressed his desire to leave BYU. We have granted his release and wish him well."
