Idaho held a 31:27 - 27:25 advantage in time of possession, went 7 of 16 on third down conversions, and were within a touchdown of Michigan State before the Spartans kicked a 23 yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the game. The day show-cased a new-look offense for the Vandals and a tough defense that played well wire-to-wire. Inside is a look at the game in photos.

Redshirt sophomore runningback Jayson Bird had a fantastic afternoon running hard behind Idaho's offensive line, earning raves from the announcers and comparisons to John Riggins on the ESPN telecast.

Jayson Bird led all rushers, gaining 89 yards on 20 carries, losing 1 yard for a net of 88 and an average of 4.4 and one TD. His touchdown effort included powering through two Michigan State defenders three yards from the goal line and diving for the score.

Kris Anderson and the Vandal offensive line played well against strong Michigan State defensive line, leading the way for Idaho to gain 113 net yards on the ground and control the time of possession in this game.

Senior defensive end Charles Campbell was part of a Vandal defensive effort that kept the Spartans within striking distance all afternoon.

Punter T.J. Conley avoided a disasterous blocked punt by tucking the ball, turning a potential turnover into an Idaho first down.

Dennis Erickson had the Vandal offense well-prepared for this afternoon's game. The objective was to run the ball well, and the Vandals did that for much of this game.

Junior runningback Brian Flowers got his first taste of Division 1-A football action Saturday, gaining 9 hard fought yards on seven carries (although a 9-yard gain from the first quarter doesn't look to be showing up in his stats). Flowers also gained 21 yards on three receptions in the game.

True freshman strong safety Shiloh Keo (10) had three tackles on the afternoon, while junior linebacker David Vobora (40) led all tacklers with 16 takedowns and 1 tackle for loss.

Junior tightend Luke Smith-Anderson (45) had a solid afternoon with 4 receptions for 29 yards and a long of 14 yards.

Senior quarterback Steve Wichman completed 17 of 31 attempts for 155 yards, a long of 31 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He was sacked twice under heavy pressure all afternoon.

Senior middle linebacker Jaron Williams (11) made his first career start with 3 tackles on the afternoon, including his part in a key 4th quarter tackle when MSU went for it on 4th and one. Junior defensive end Ben Alexander (58) finished tied for third on the team with seven tackles and a broken up pass.
