Half-way through the 3rd quarter, things started looking bleak as ASU took a 31-23 lead.

Down 31-23 to ASU half-way through the 3rd quarter, Idaho true freshman strong safety D.J. Dykes intercepted an Indian pass and followed a convoy of blockers, returning it 61 yards to the house (shown here crossing the goal line). The interception sparked a 22 point Vandal scoring spree. D.J. would later single-handedly shut the door on a 4th quarter ASU drive with one of the biggest hits ever delivered by a Vandal safety on an opposing receiver, causing a sure completion to fall incomplete on the carpet.

Senior TEAM CAPTAIN, #36 Brian Yarno, shown above clearing space for runningback Jayson Bird. Brian is listed as Idaho's #2 TE this fall, and has seen the most extensive playing time of his career (7 catches on the season), and also handles long-snapping duties.

True freshman runningback Jayson Bird is part of a freshman RB tandem that has been outstanding this fall. Against ASU Jayson rushed for an eye-popping 171 yards on 25 carries with 2 TDs. The above sequence (40+ yard gain) occurred in the 4th quarter and led to Idaho's game clinching touchdown.

True freshman runningback Rolly Lumbala's bruising running style continues to be a phenominal contrast to Jayson Bird. Against ASU, Lumbala carried the rock 21 times for 91 yards and 1 first quarter TD. He lost just 1 yard all game.

Junior college transfer Antwaun Sherman, an athlete who started the year at CB that has since taken-over kick return duties, also joined the Vandal runningback rotation. Against ASU the slippery speedster had 5 carries for 43 yards. He also also averaged over 20 yards per kick-off return (5 returns this game), with a long of 26 yards.

Senior WR #84 Bobby Bernal-Wood continues to be quarterback Michael Harrington's favorite target. On the year Bobby has twice as many catches as any other Vandal (75), and against ASU recorded 6 grabs for 30 yards. Senior TE Willie Sipoloa scored one of Idaho's 2 TDs through the air.

Hats off to junior center Jarrod Schulte, a former walk-on who this spring earned a scholarship and has started 9 games at center for Idaho. He played through an injury in this game and helped anchor a young Vandal offensive line that has matured significantly this fall. Congratulations also to junior quarterback Michael Harrington on an impressive performance. He completed 2 TD passes on the day (1 to TE Willie Sipoloa, the other to RB Jayson Bird), had no interceptions, guided Idaho into the endzone 5 times, and completed 76% of his passes on the day.

Congratulations to head coach Nick Holt and the rest of the Vandal coaching staff on this victory. This staff has played more true freshmen than any other program in the country, and the development of the team this season is admirable.

Finally, congratulations to the team, and the seniors in particular, on an impressive win Saturday. Best of luck at North Texas this Saturday, and good luck in the season finale in Hawai'i in 2 weeks.
