THE VANDALS, FIGHTING FOR THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE 2012 SEASON, had their best shot yet against…
Three for Trey
NO.1 - Placekicker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards
University of Idaho senior kicker Trey Farquhar was chosen the Placekicker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards for his efforts in the Vandals' victory over New Mexico State.
Farquhar accounted for 14 of the Vandals' 26 points after booting field goals of 55, 53, 39 and 32 yards in addition to two PATs.
A graduate of East Redlands High School (Redlands, Calif.), Farquhar is Idaho's all-time field goal percentage leader after being successful on 51 of 65 (78.5 percent) of his career attempts. That number includes nine of 10 this season. He also has the Idaho record for field goals of 50 yards or longer with nine. His longest is 55, which he has done twice (last Saturday and vs. San Jose State in 2011) and is second-longest in school history.
NO.2 - Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Star of the Week
MOSCOW, Idaho – Add another one to the list for Idaho senior kicker Trey Farquhar.
Farquhar was honored on Tuesday as a Star of the Week for the second time in three weeks by the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
The fourth-year Vandal kicker connected on all four field goal attempts and both PATs in Idaho's 26-18 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday. He hit from 55, 53, 39 and 32 yards to move his kicking tally to 10-of-11 this season.
The 55-yarder as time expired in the first half tied his career long and the 53-yarder in the third quarter gave him his ninth career field goal of 50 yards or longer – an Idaho school record. He's made all seven of his attempts this season from beyond 40 yards and leads the Vandals with 39 points. In the last two seasons, Farquhar is 5-of-6 from 50 or more yards.
The Groza Star of the Week honor goes along with his Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award and his College Football Performance Awards National Kicker of the Week honor, also for the second time in three weeks.
NO.3 - WAC Players of the Week announced (Official WAC Press Release)
Denver - Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon, Utah State linebacker Kyler Fackrell and Idaho placekicker Trey Farquhar were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.
Dixon, a freshman from Strong, Ark. (Strong HS), rushed for 102 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries in Louisiana Tech's 58-31 win over UNLV. He also caught one pass for 10 yards, his first career reception. Dixon became the fourth Bulldog in school history to rush for four touchdowns and the first since 2004. Three of his touchdown runs came during a stretch in the third and fourth quarters when the Bulldogs scored 31 straight points.
Fackrell, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz. (Mesa HS), had 10 tackles (4 solo) and his first career interception in the game at Brigham Young. Fackrell's interception came in the fourth quarter and helped set up an Aggie field goal attempt. Despite losing, the Utah State defense held BYU to just six points, the fewest on the road for an Aggie team since 1995.
Farquhar, a senior from Redlands, Calif. (Redlands East Valley), was perfect in his placekicking duties with four field goals and two extra points in Idaho's 26-18 win over New Mexico State. Farquhar scored the final nine points for the Vandals including a 55-yard field goal at the end of the first half and another 53-yarder near the end of the third quarter.
Others nominated on offense: junior receiver Jahrie Level, Idaho; and senior wide receiver Matt Austin, Utah State.
Also nominated on defense: senior safety Gary Walker, Idaho; senior safety Jamel Johnson, Louisiana Tech; and junior linebacker Trashaun Nixon, New Mexico State.
Other special teams nominations included: senior running back Malon Lee, Louisiana Tech; and senior punter Tyler Bennett, Utah State.
