Seahawks take Toomer in Fifth Round

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO SENIOR LINEBACKER KOREY TOOMER capped off his Idaho career by being picked in the 5th Round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks as the 154th overall selection. Toomer was a second team All-WAC pick, and although he didn't get an invite to the Combine, he caught the attention of NFL scouts when he registered a 4.53-40 and 42-inch vertical at Idaho's pro day.

One of Idaho's most athletic linebackers, Korey Toomer (a Second Team All-WAC selection) capped his three years in Moscow by being picked in the 5th round of the NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks with the 154th overall pick.

The 6-foot-2.5, 235-pound Toomer originally signed with the Vandals right out of high school in 2007, but before he could enroll at Idaho he had to take a 2-year detour to the JC ranks at Arizona Western. Despite offers from Colorado State and Nevada, Toomer kept his commitment to Robb Akey and the Vandal coaching staff, and transferred to Idaho in the fall of 2009.

The hard-hitting linebacker saw immediate action on several special teams units that year as he made the transition to Division 1A, and during Idaho's Humanitarian Bowl season recorded eight tackles and one recovered fumble on the year. As the season progressed the athletic Toomer began earning more reps in the Vandal weakside linebacker rotation.

Poised to play a major roll in 2010, Toomer suffered a season ending injury during fall camp and took a redshirt year.

Last fall he picked up right where he left off in 2009 and started 11 games for the Vandals. He finished with 68 tackles (fifth on the team), 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, 1 interception, four pass breakups, five deflections and three QB hurries. He also recovered a fumble.

By the end of the season, Toomer was being used by the Vandals on offense as well, carrying the rock in short yardage situations. He finished the year with 9 carries and scoring three touchdowns for Idaho.

Now he will take his game to the next level.
