Senior Night for three Vandals Saturday
Under head coach Don Verlin, Idaho is a remarkable 3-0 in Senior Night games. Saturday night the Vandals take on Portland State of the Big Sky Conference, a team that despite their close proximity the Vandals have only played 18 times, and only twice since 1980. The Vikings hold a 10-8 advantage in the series, and won the last meeting in 2005, in a rare 61-59 close contest.
The Vandals come in as the No.3 team in the WAC with a 15-11 overall mark and 7-4 WAC record. Statistically the Vandals are ranked No.25 in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (38.8%), No.26 in field goal percentage from the floor (47.8%), and No.59 in blocked shots (4.3 per game). The Vandals are well-balanced between the front and back court, and are led by a mature group of three seniors who have put the team first throughout their career in Moscow.
For this weekend we salute Idaho's seniors.
Djim Bandoumel joined the Vandals last season as a junior and appeared in eight games, shooting 43.5% from the field and 83.3% from the free throw line. This season, Djim has played a prominant role on the team, starting 20 games and playing in 25 total. For the year he's shooting 56% from the field and 67% from the free throw line. He's blocked 39 shots on the year (second only to Kyle Barone) and has 27 assists on the year. Behind the numbers, Bandoumel is one of the spark plugs on the Vandal team, displaying tremendous athleticism with timely plays. He's also been instrumental in the growth and continued development of center Barone.
Deremy Geiger joined the Vandals last year and has started every game the last two years for Idaho. As a junior he finished with 8.7 points per game (5th on the team) and 84 assists (3rd on the team). He led the WAC shooting 86.9% from the free throw line. This year as a senior, Geiger is shooting 78.5% from the free throw line (1st on team), 45% from the field, and he's dished 62 assists (2nd on the team) on the year. Particularly impressive however is his 43.6% three-point field goal percentage, which currently ranks No.2 in the WAC and No.19 in the nation. Idaho's marksman, Geiger often comes up big in big games. At Oregon State he led the Vandals to a 74-60 win over the Beavers, including scoring a career-high and game-high 27-points on the night, and a blistering 7-of-9 from three point range.
Landon Tatum has started every game this season at point guard, giving Idaho a potent back court next to Geiger. Tatum joined the program in 2009 and redshited his first season at Idaho. As a junior last year he played in every game and finished the year with 97 assists (No.1 on the team), and a WAC leading 97:44 assists-to-turnover ratio. He shot 44% from the field and 65% from the line. As a senior this year Tatum has started every game and led the Vandals with maturity and experience. From the field he's shooting 44.4%, 48.1% from 3-point range, and 69.8% from the free-throw line. For the season he's dished 116 assists and has 23 steals on the year.
