UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO JUNIOR PUNTER BOBBY COWAN, a 2010 First Team All-WAC selection, was honored recently by being named a 2011 College Football Preseason All-American Honorable Mention selection. Cowan led the Western Athletic Conference in 2010 with a 45.14 yards per punt average, and ranked 13th in the NCAA in punting average.

By the time the dust had settled the 2010 season, Idaho punter Bobby Cowan (from Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Wash.) had accumulated an impressive average of 45.14 yards per punt, which was the second highest avearge in University of Idaho history. Combined with his freshman year average of 43.0, he has a school record average of 44.23 yards per punt.

For his efforts, he was named a First Team Western Athletic Conference selection.

With the 2011 season on the horizon, Cowan is beginning to make some noise now outside the Conference and recently was named to the Preseason All-American Team as an Honorable Mention selection.

The link below is to the 2010 statistics for the punters on the radar screen for All-American honors. The First Team pick is Andrew Butler of Georgia. The Second Team pick is Kyle Martens of Rice. And the Third Team pick is Quinn Sharp out of Oklahoma State.

Idaho junior Bobby Cowan is listed among six Honorable Mention selections:
Bryan Anger, Senior, California
Bobby Cowan, Junior, Idaho
Jeff Locke, Junior, UCLA
Matt Rinehart, Senior, Kent State
Brian Stahovich, Senior, SDSU
Kirby VanDerKamp, Sophomore, Iowa State
Reviewing the statistics of the punters in this list, Cowan's 2010 average of 45.1 yards per punt is right in the middle of the pack. One area where Cowan will be looking to improve is the number of kicks that pin the opponent inside their 20 yard line. Last year Cowan accomplished the task 16 times. Among his peers on this list, a couple more inside the 20 could make a difference.

What's particularly impressive is that his average of 45.1 yards per punt resulted in just three touchbacks on the year.

If Cowan can maintain this level of performance he could rewrite the all-time record books at the University of Idaho, and will continue to be considered for Conference and national honors for his efforts.
